Unforgiven, a Raw pay-per-view, took place on September 18, 2005 from Oklahoma City, OK, and at the time earned 243,000 worldwide PPV buys. With the main-event being the first match in the renewal of the John Cena-Kurt Angle rivalry that we'd seen over a year before on SmackDown, was this single-brand event a decent follow-up to the good Summerslam PPV the previous month?
Ric Flair defeated Carlito for his first ever WWE Intercontinental Championship in a mediocre opener. After the match 'Naitch' made a barely-believable claim that winning this secondary title (once prestigious, the IC Championship had been treated with disdain by WWE for years at this point) was as important to him as his 16 World Heavyweight title reigns. Yeah, right! At least Slick Ric provided some proper entertainment throughout the evening, cavorting with ladies young enough to be his daughters in a limosine, and at one hilarious point, popping Viagra.
Trish Stratus made her return to in-ring action after a long injury (throughout which she still remained Women's Champion) in a tag team match teaming with that year's Diva Search winner Ashley Massaro against Victoria and Torrie Wilson. A poor match, dragged down further by the rotten Wilson and the completely inexperienced Massaro. The action didn't improve by much when the Big Show faced and defeated the poster boy for Colgate, Snistky. At least, at just over 6 minutes, it was short, but not sweet.
Chavo Guerrero was putting his efforts into the ridiculous "middle-class American" gimmick of Kerwin White at this point, and had a match with Shelton Benjamin. The bout itself was good, despite people (even J.R) not being able to take Chavo seriously, but this still all felt like filler for the evening. At last, an exciting match stemming from an exciting feud came next, as Matt Hardy finally got his revenge on love-cheat Edge by defeating him in a fine Steel Cage match.
Southern boys Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch won the World Tag Team Championship from the Hurricane and Rosey in Unforgiven's match no. 6. Here again, like almost all of the card so far, it felt like nothing more special than what you'd get on a bog-standard episode of Raw. Before the main-event, Shawn Michaels beat 'The Masterpiece' Chris Masters in a good match.
Thankfully, despite the fact we'd seen it all before, the main-event was excellent. The unusual fan dymanic of many of the Oklahoma City audience wanted Angle (the heel) to win, and Cena was roundly booed, something that still happens to WWE's No.1 babyface many times to this day. The only blight on a terrific show-closer was the annoying DQ ending when Cena whacked Angle with the WWE Championship belt, but at least this signalled that there'd be more to come from this feud.
Unforgiven 2005 wasn't bad overall. The undercard, aside from the Steel Cage match and Michaels-Masters, was mediocre to poor, but those two matches plus the WWE Championship main-event were enough to make this PPV well above average.
