A must buy for any wwe fan a very enjoyable event . the paul london and brian kendrick vs idol stevens and kc james is a treat with a fantastic ending and the main event is one of the best matches of 2006 the only problem with the ppv is the rubbish and pointless match between mvp and marty garner .
SmackDown's No Mercy on October 8, 2006 emanated from the home of the Hardys, Raleigh, NC. The main-event saw King Booker defend his World Heavyweight title in a Fatal 4-Way match against arch-nemesis Batista, Finlay and Bobby Lashley. But what of the undercard?...
The opening match saw Matt Hardy score a popular win in front of his hometown crowd in an excellent match against Cruiserweight Champion Gregory Helms. Unfortunately, like all their other `06 encounters, this wasn't for Helms' title, as WWE obviously thought that Matt was either too big in size or in status to hold this championship for a second time. Following this was a mediocre tag team encounter where non-descript challengers K.C James and Idol Stevens (managed by Michelle McCool) failed to dethrone WWE Tag Team champs Brian Kendrick and Paul London.
Montel Vontavious Porter made his PPV debut next, as he squashed jobber wrestler Marty Garner. An interesting story behind MVP's debut is that he was originally to face (and defeat) the returning Chris Benoit at No Mercy, but the plan was scrapped as WWE didn't want 'The Rabid Wolverine' to lose to a newcomer in his comeback bout. Another champion was involved in a non-title match next, as United States title-holder Mr. Kennedy took on the imposing Undertaker in the first PPV match of their long-running feud. Kennedy got disqualified in a mildly disappointing encounter when he hit `Taker with the U.S title belt.
Former best friends Rey Mysterio and Chavo Guerrero had been feuding since the Great American Bash, where Chavo had cost Rey his World Heavyweight Championship. Their Falls Count Anywhere match at this PPV was expected to be their feud-ender, although they would go on to have an I Quit match on SmackDown shortly after. Mysterio defeated Guerrero in a good-enough, but not fantastic brawl. This was followed by Chris Benoit's return to action after a 5-month break, and he defeated William Regal via Crossface submission in an enjoyable technical encounter.
The Fatal 4-Way main event was a disappointment, all told. A match put in place to fill the schedules until King Booker and Batista's obvious 1-on-1 battle for the World title at the upcoming Survivor Series. Bobby Lashley was obviously on the rise as a favoured main-event player in WWE managements eyes, but he hadn't got their yet, and noone bought the veteren Finlay as a World Heavyweight Championship contender. The 6-time World Champion Booker T retained his gold when he pinned 'The Fighting Irishman'.
As a single-brand PPV obviously needed to fill some time until the next "A-Level" event (Survivor Series), No Mercy was decent enough without being spectacularly excellent. MVP's debut was effective enough, Benoit's comeback was popular with the crowd, and the feuds between Undertaker and Kennedy, and Batista and Booker, had been set off well. The main-event match was nothing to write home about, but all in all, No Mercy `06 was a pretty good show.
