It is a great ppv of 2003. Chris beniot's match is very good and cena's match was also very good. The other matches were good but not so good as those matches. The best match of the night was the main event, which was Brock lesnar vs undertaker in a biker chain match. I recommend this to be in your 2003 ppv collection.
At the start of the single brand PPVs,Smack Down! had a reputation for producing better quality PPVs than Raw,No Mercy is no exception.
The under card was a fine bag, with Rey Vs Tajiri being the stand out match, saying that watching Chris Benoit drag a good match out of A-Train is still something to behold
Of the top matches,Eddie Vs The Big Show did neither man any favors,Its not a bad match just not one youll remember long afterwards.Taker Vs Lesnar in a Biker Chain match is a great main event and one of the best in the pairs many matches
Kurt Angle Vs John Cena is a fantastic match that still stands as one of Cena's best
Stealing the show tho is the Father Vs Daughter I Quit match. A match that should have been cringe inducing instead turns out to be a great bout packed with drama thanks in part to an electric crowd
No Mercy was held in Baltimore, MD on October 19, 2003 and, as SmackDown's second single-brand worldwide pay-per-view, fan expectations must have been high after the fantastic Vengeance, as No Mercy garnered a decent 254,000 PPV purchases.
The opener saw the popular Rey Mysterio attempt to regain the Cruiserweight Championship over Tajiri. A good, fast-paced match. The action continued when Chris Benoit met A-Train. Though the former Albert was slightly under-rated as a super heavyweight, it's no secret that Benoit was able to have great or good matches with almost any wrestler, and he did so on this night, before emerging victorious via the Sharpshooter.
One-legged wonder Zach Gowen was looking for his first PPV win in WWE, and No Mercy was his chance, as he faced Matt Hardy in the match they were supposed to have at Summerslam (Hardy won "via forfeit" on the pre-Summerslam episode of Heat, as Gowen couldn't compete thanks to a brutal attack on a previous SmackDown by Brock Lesnar). Zach shocked 'The Sensei of Mattitude' when he used a moonsault for the win in an adequate match. Next, The bland Basham Brothers beat the APA in a nothing match with help from their returning valet, Linda 'Shaniqua' Miles.
The first ever Father vs. Daughter "I Quit" match was next, as Mr. McMahon vowed to show his daughter, SmackDown GM Stephanie some tough love. Steph lost the match and therefore her job on Thursday Nights in a surprisingly enjoyable match when mother Linda threw in the towel whilst the maniacal Vince was choking his own daughter with a lead pipe. Hard to believe now, but John Cena's popularity was growing quite considerably in late-2003, and though officially he was the heel in his No Mercy match with Kurt Angle, he had just as many supporters in Baltimore as 'The Olympic Hero'. Nethertheless, Cena tapped out to the Ankle Lock, but it was clear from this night onwards that WWE had big plans for 'The Doctor of Thuganomics'.
Two title matches closed the show. First up, the United States Championship, Eddie Guerrero defending against the 500lb Big Show. After the popular Eddie had routinely humiliated Show on SmackDown, the big man and former 2-time WWE Champion was looking for as brutal a measure of revenge as possible. Despite Guerrero's many underhand attempts to retain, Big Show walked out of No Mercy with his first ever United States title (The Giant unofficially held the U.S Championship years previously in WCW, but the title reign has never been acknowledged by wrestling historians) in a good match. Brock Lesnar has recently defeated Kurt Angle in a fantastic 1-hour Ironman match on SmackDown to win his third WWE Championship, and his first defence was against old adversary the Undertaker in a Biker Chain match (whoever gets hold of a chain on a pole can legally use it in the match). Though the action was at times very good, thanks to Lesnar and `Takers long feud in `02, this all felt like a case of "seen it all before". The ending of the match was intriguing though, as Vince McMahon helped Lesnar retain with a physical distraction, setting up the infamous Buried Alive match between Undertaker and McMahon at Survivor Series the following month.
No Mercy 2003 was enjoyable, and SmackDown was still proving to be better than Raw for quality wrestling and enjoyable angles. But this PPV wasn't a patch on Vengeance from July, a great 3 hours in WWE history. But this event was a lot of fun and well worth a purchase.
