Since Backlash the previous month, WWE had officially ended the 4-year single brand pay per view experiment, and now every major event on the company's calendar was a tri-brand affair, featuring the Superstars from Raw, ECW and SmackDown. Judgment Day from St. Louis, MO on May 20, 2007 had three big World title matches from each WWE brand, and promised to be a memorable PPV.

The opener was a dismal encounter between former tag team partners Ric Flair and Carlito. The Puerto Rican second generation wrestler had recently turned on his mentor 'The Nature Boy', and Flair exacted a measure of revenge in a poor match when Carlito tapped to the Figure 4 Leglock. The first of the three World title bouts came next, as ECW Champion Mr. McMahon teamed with son Shane and Umaga in a handicap defence against former champ Bobby Lashley. The challenger thought he'd regained the title when he pinned Shane, but Vince cruelly announced that as he, the defending champion, was never pinned, the ECW Championship remains in the possession of the WWE Chairman.

Another ECW brand contest followed, as CM Punk and Elijah Burke contested a decent match which Punk won with the Go To Sleep. Next up was the personal war between Shawn Michaels and Randy Orton. 'The Legend Killer' had brutally attacked 'The Showstopper' prior to the match starting, and though HBK gave it his all, eventually Orton was declared the winner via referee stoppage. After this, Orton viciously punted Michaels in the head, and HBK would not be seen in WWE for months after.

Matt and Jeff Hardy had reunited once again following WrestleMania to win a World Tag Team title battle royal on Raw, despite the fact that Matt was actually a SmackDown wrestler. Still the champs, they had another defence against former title-holders Trevor Murdoch and Lance Cade. To the delight of the St. Louis crowd, the Hardys won a decent match to walk out of Judgment Day still Raw's tag team champions of the world. This was followed by Edge's defence of the World Heavyweight Championship against Batista. 'The Rated R Superstar' retained the gold when he schoolboyed 'The Animal' in a good match.

The penultimate PPV bout was a 2-out-of-3 falls match for the United States Championship. Montel Vontavious Porter had failed to get the title from Chris Benoit at the two previous pay per views, so it was quite the shocker when he not only beat 'The Ravid Wolverine' for the championship on this night, but he did it in two straight falls. MVP would go on to hold the U.S title for almost a whole year. The main event was arguably WWE Champion John Cena's biggest challenge in his career, the 7-foot former World Heavyweight Champion the Great Khali. To the world's amazement, Cena and Khali had a respectable, if not great, match, which saw the champ overcome the massive odds and retain his title when Khali submitted to the STFU.

Judgment Day 2007 was a very enjoyable PPV, with only the first match of the night being a true disappointment. With the extreme rules excitement of One Night Stand, and the title frenzy of Vengeance:Night Of Champions to follow, this promised to be quite the interesting springtime in World Wrestling Entertainment.
