Many people consider 2009 a bad year for WWE. RAW turned into a bit of a shambles towards the end of the year, ECW got worse ratings every week and the PPVs seemed to be missing something. However looking back over the year and 2009 wasn't as bad as everyone seems to think. Although it wasn't as phenomenal as 2008, 2009 still delievered some classic matches.
Now with the "Best of 2009: PPV matches" DVD coming out, you may be hesitant to buy this box set. However there are so many great matches that are left off the "Best of PPV matches" DVD. Plus I feel compilations never seem to do a match justice, as you often lose the build up to the big matches. So here are my short reviews of each PPV:
Royal Rumble 2009 - The undercard was much better than this year's, with Jeff Hardy and Edge's bout definitely the pick of the bunch. The Rumble itself was very interesting, with the battle between HHH and Legacy right at the core of it. If you're an Orton fan, you should definitely own this.
MOTN (Match of The Night): Royal Rumble Match.
No Way Out 2009 - Best PPV of the year in my opinion. Two incredible chamber matches, an emotional contest between JBL and HBK, and a great No Holds Barred bout between Shane McMahon and Orton, which featured probably the last real bloodspot for WWE. This will probably best be remembered for Edge losing the WWE title and winning the World Heavyweight in the same night, but there is so much more to this PPV. Simply a Fantastic show.
MOTN: Elimination Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Title.
Wrestlemania 25 - A Disappointing Wrestlemania in my opinion, especially if you compare it to this year's. The Brother vs Brother Extreme Rules match was good, Jericho's battle with the legends was good and Money In The Bank was good but not the best. The main event between Orton and HHH was definitely lacking, and would've been much better booked as a No DQ match. There were no bad matches, but no really great ones either - except one of course. At the heart of this PPV lies an absolute classic, between the two best Wrestlers to have ever lived - Shawn Michaels and Undertaker.
MOTN/Year: Undertaker Vs Shawn Michaels
Backlash 2009 - Backlash picked up where 'Mania left off with quite similar results - disappointing. The I Quit Match between the Hardys wasn't as good as their 'Mania bout, and having Jericho wrestle Steamboat again was pushing it a bit. However the two title bouts delievered, with John Cena and Edge's three year rivalry coming to a dramatic end.
MOTN: Last Man Standing Match - John Cena Vs Edge
Judgment Day 2009 - By the time Judgment Day rolled round the WWE had started to pick up momentum again and it showed. John Morrison and Shelton Benjamin had a great contest, as did Edge and Jeff Hardy in the main event. However Judgment day saw the start of the rivalry of the year in my opinion between Rey Mysterio and Chris Jericho. Every match between these two was a classic and its a shame arguably their worst bout made it onto the Best of PPV matches DVD.
MOTN: Rey Mysterio Vs Chris Jericho
Extreme Rules 2009 - Even in the PG Era, WWE's "One Night of Extreme" still continues to deliver top drawer matches year on year. The inaugural Extreme Rules' PPV had many stand out moments, from Tommy Dreamer winning the ECW title after all these years to the epic ladder match between Jeff Hardy and Edge, and eventually culminating in CM Punk's shocking title win. However amidst all these great moments and matches, Mysterio and Jericho still manage to steal the show.
MOTN: Rey Mysterio Vs Chris Jericho
The Bash 2009 - WWE's Seventh PPV of the year saw HHH and Randy Orton's rivalry come to an end in a glorified, but entertaining, Stretcher match. As their rivalry came to an end, CM Punk and Jeff Hardy's was just taking off and their bout at The Bash was a good indicator for the things to come. The Bash also marked the return of the Scramble Match, which was as good as any of it's predecessors. However it was Mysterio and Jericho who, yet again, stole the show.
MOTN: Intercontinental Title Vs Mask - Rey Mysterio vs Chris Jericho.
Night Of Champions 2009 - Definitely the WWE's weakest PPV of the year, with only a few matches being able to deliver. CM Punk and Jeff Hardy's contest was definitely their weakest, the Orton/Cena/HHH Triple Threat was as adequate as their Wrestlemania 24 bout and The Six Pack Challenge was enjoyable but not spectacular. Night Of Champions saw Rey Mysterio deliver a quality match yet again, this time against the highly talented Dolph Ziggler.
MOTN: Dolph Ziggler Vs Rey Mysterio
Summerslam 2009: Definitely the best Summerslam since 2005, with alot of great matches. Rey Mysterio and Dolph Ziggler topped their Night of Champions match, Randy Orton and John Cena started their fascinating rivalry and DX returned to take on Legacy in a great Tag Team match. However in Jeff Hardy's final PPV appearance, he took on CM Punk in a classic TLC Match. Forget Cena and Edge from 2006, this was truly spectacular.
MOTN: TLC Match - CM Punk Vs Jeff Hardy
Breaking Point 2009: If Summerslam was great, then Breaking Point was magnificent. Although there were several hiccups (Khali and Kane were given yet more air time and CM Punk and Undertaker re-did the Montreal Screwjob for the Umteenth time) Breaking Point for the most part was sensational. Christian and William Regal made up for their 8 second match at Summerslam with a fantastic back and forth match. The first ever Submissions Count Anywhere match between DX and Legacy created a fantastic blueprint for all future matches of this kind, with the two teams fighting in the ring, crowd and backstage area. However it was John Cena and Randy Orton in an amazing I Quit Match, where Randy Orton showed what a great performer he has become. It was perfect storytelling wrestling, with good battling then overcoming evil. Got to hand it to Cena as well, its hard not to respect him after watching that match, great stuff.
MOTN: I Quit Match - John Cena Vs Randy Orton
Hell In A Cell 2009 - This was quite a mixed PPV, with some great matches and some truly shocking ones. CM Punk and Undertaker continued their run of bad matches in one of the shortest and unsatisfying Hell In A Cell matches in history and Drew McIntyre and R-Truth also had a very pointless contest. Despite this Hell In A Cell turned out alright, with Orton and Cena continuing to deliver great matches and John Morrison and Dolph Ziggler having a superb match for the Intercontinental title. However after all these years, DX and Legacy still managed to produce an innovative HIAC match, proving they were the right choice to end the PPV.
MOTN: Hell In A Cell Match - DX Vs Legacy
Bragging Rights 2009: Many people see Bragging Rights as a bad PPV because there was literally only one match that delivered - luckily that match was a 1/3 of the PPV. Cena and Orton managed to build on their great Hell In A Cell and I Quit matches by producing a highly entertaining Iron Man match. Don't expect Bret Vs Shawn in this one, anything goes was the stipulation and anything did go - pyrotechnics, interferences, tables, announce tables, steel steps, stage lights, barricades, you name it. Amazingly the match you'll find on the Best of 2009 DVD is the appauling Smackdown Vs Raw match.
MOTN: Anything Goes 60 Minute Iron Man Match: John Cena Vs Randy Orton
Survivor Series 2009: This show proved why WWE's decision to drop the Survivor Series PPV was the right one. For me there were only two matches that delievered and they were Team Orton Vs Team Kingston and the main event match between Cena and DX. Shockingly, both were left off the Best of PPV matches DVD.
MOTN: Team Orton Vs Team Kingston
Tables, Ladders and Chairs 2009: WWE ended the year on a bad note with this one. Shelton Benjamin and Christian had an amazing ladder match at the start of the evening and no other match seemed to come anywhere near it for the rest of the night. The Sheamus and John Cena match dragged, the Chair match between Undertaker and Batista was laughable and The main event between DX and Jerishow may have been down as a TLC match, but it may as well have been a ladder match with only one table getting broken. Sour end to an otherwise great year.
MOTN: Ladder Match - Christian Vs Shelton Benjamin
So although for the most part the Best of PPV matches 2009 DVD does indeed highlight the best matches of the year, there are many more great matches that aren't included. It seems that with the Best of PPV matches DVD, WWE have sacrificed quality for variety. John Cena/Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio/Chris Jericho had several amazing matches yet only one of each rivalry is featured. For that reason, I'd recommend getting this boxset and judging for yourself what the best matches of 2009 were.
