Blogs
As we approach the 24th SummerSlam event I thought it would be a good idea to look back at some of the greatest moments and memories of the last 23 SummerSlams. Below are 7 of my favourite and at the end you'll get the opportunity to tell me yours and possibly win a prize!

Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H
SummerSlam 2002
I never thought Shawn Michaels would be coming back, let alone return in such style. Not only did he have the match of the year but he went on to arguably have an even greater run then before his first retirement in 1998. I’ll admit that I had to look away from the TV a few times as I was so worried for Michaels and the abuse his back was getting at the hands of Triple H. I feared it wouldn’t be long until Michaels was back on the injured list.
Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage vs. Ted DiBiase & Andre The Giant
SummerSlam 1988
This was the very first SummerSlam event and a main event featuring the 4 biggest superstars in the world at the time. It wasn’t any of these guys who gave me my memorable moment but the lovely Miss Elizabeth, God rest her soul. This was years before the attitude era and let’s just say that Elizabeth found a way to distract the bad guys that left me red faced – hey, I was pretty young and impressionable at the time! A must watch show, for many reasons.
Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog
SummerSlam 1992
How many of you were lucky enough to be there? This was the first PPV to ever be held outside North America and the only one since. A great card featuring some legends of sports entertainment but really it was all about the main event. An Epic match that saw Wembley on its feet and cheering so proudly for Bulldog’s victory that they were no doubt heard all over London.
Team WWE vs. Team Nexus
SummerSlam 2010
This was the feud that had been getting hotter week by week and it all came to a head at SummerSlam. One of the biggest moments was when Daniel Bryan made his return as the surprise member of Team WWE, against his old cohorts in Nexus. This was one match that I never expected John Cena to come out of as the winner, but he somehow managed to prevail.
Hulk Hogan vs. Shawn Michaels
SummerSlam 2005
This is a fine example of how great Shawn Michaels in that he was able to turn the fans against him in the build up to this titanic encounter between 2 of the greatest of all time. A few years ago many would have never thought this match would happen, but it did, and what a great match it was too. I should have known better but I really thought Michaels had Hogan beat after the superkick.
Brainbusters vs. Hart Foundation
SummerSlam 1989
Arguably the greatest opening match of any PPV ever. Tag team wrestling at its very best in a match where the titles belonging to the Brainbusters were not on the line, and many think that’s because Arn and Tully were scared of losing them. Maybe they should have had more confidence in their own ability as they won the match, though credit has to go to Bobby Heenan as his interference facilitated that victory.
CM Punk vs Jeff Hardy
SummerSlam 2009
As far as TLC matches go this was one of the best. When Hardy had Swanton Bombed onto the announcer’s table I felt for sure that he was done, but he somehow managed to get back into the ring and stop Punk form grabbing the title belt. However that was a short lived reprieve for Hardy as he ended up on the receiving end of a huge punch from Punk that sent Hardy flying and enabled Punk to scale the ladder and claim his 3rd World Heavyweight Championship. But wow, how about the aftermarth of the match when Undertaker appeared and Chokeslammed Punk straight to hell!

The Summerslam PPV holds many memories. I always felt it was the final hurrah of the summer holidays before going back to school in September. Here's my top 3 memories from the event:
3) 2001 - Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle. I was always an Angle fan but this match really solidified him as one of the best of all time. It's incredible to think that his career only began less than 2 years prior. I always felt that this match went beyond the Invasion angle that was going on at the time. This was a perfect battle of good vs. evil. The roles were played perfectly - Austin mercilessly throws Angle repeatedly into the ring post and hits stunner after stunner but Angle won't give up. I won't spoil the finish for anyone who hasn't seen it (and if you haven't, why not?) but it really is wrestling done right.
2) 1993 - This was the first PPV I ever saw so it holds a lot of memories for me. Hard to pick a specific moment from it but I'll single out Steiners/Heavenly Bodies, the Tatanka/Gunns vs. Bam Bam/Headshrinkers 6-man tag and of the course the whole Bret/Lawler/Doink saga as highlights.
1) 1991 - Since 93 was the first current PPV I saw, I hold it responsible for really turning me on to wrestling. I remember ordering videos all the time from the old Mega Mail catalogue. One of these being Summerslam 91. It became one of my most watched tapes and probably my favourite Summerslam of all time. From the Jailhouse match to the Million Dollar Man vs. Virgil to the Matches Made in Heaven and Hell, this show had it all. But one match particularly stood out to me. And still stands out 20 years later. That being Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect for the Intercontinental Championship. Even at a young age, I realised that this was an absolute classic match. I never grow tired of watching it which proves that it has and always will stand the test of time.

My top 3 Summerslam memories:
1. Summerslam 2008 - John Cena vs Batista
I started watching wrestling in late 2005 and at the time these two were the biggest stars in the company. Cena was the face of Raw and Batista was the face of Smackdown. So naturally ever since I started watching WWE I really wanted this match to happen. So along came the Summer of 2008 and it was the perfect time for this match to happen. Both were on Raw, crossed each other's paths and the inevitable happened. A match was arranged for Summerslam. The match itself was fantastic, it was awesome to see, especially for me. It was a very exciting match and the atmosphere was amazing, the crowd were completely split on who they wanted to win. Both men were baby-face's at the time and we got a straight up clean finish. I was always rooting for Batista, who won, which gives me another reason to love this match.
2. Summerslam 2002 - Shawn Michaels vs Triple H (Unsanctioned Street Fight)
The word %u201Cepic%u201D is used very often by wrestling fans to describe matches, but most of the time it%u2019s an exaggeration. However, this match truly defines the word epic. The back story was that Michaels was injured four years ago, he returned earlier in the year at Vengeance and proposed to Triple H that they should reform the classic stable DX. The next night on Raw Triple H turned on his best friend, leading to this match. Many people had doubts on whether Michaels could perform to the level he did in the 90%u2019s. Come Summerslam and Michaels proved those people wrong. The match was an %u201Cunsanctioned street fight%u201D so they could do whatever they wanted. Many weapons were used but the storytelling was still fantastic. In the end HBK defeated Triple H, it was truly a feel good and inspiring match.
3. Summerslam 1996 - Undertaker vs Mankind (Boiler Room Brawl)
This was the first ever (and in my opinion best) Boiler Room Brawl match. The concept was the first man to exit the boiler room, enter the ring and take the urn from Paul Bearer would win. It%u2019s not every one's cup of tea but I found the match different and thoroughly entertaining. These two fought for a good 25 minutes, in the boiler room (obviously), in the backstage arena where we see various other superstars, and finally in the ring. It ends quite shockingly as Paul Bearer betrays his long time friend the Undertaker, hitting him with the urn and giving Mankind the victory. It was special to me because I'd never seen anything like it before. Overall a very underrated and entertaining match.
So there you have it, my favourite memories of Summerslam. Hope I win! Cheers Silvervision!
