Desert Island Wrestling Matches

7 Mar 2011

Posté par Suplex Master (33 commentaires)

The rules are that you can take 10 WWE/WCW/ECW matches onto your island (you of course have a means to watch them) BUT each performer can feature once! No cheating by including Mankind, Cactus Jack and Dude Love – only 1 Mick Foley match allowed. Give reasons for their inclusion. Here are mine.

The Future of WWE

John Cena v Umaga – Royal Rumble 2007
For a start, I can’t believe that this was over 4 years ago – where the hell did the time go? When the former Jamal came back to WWE after some time in Japan nobody could have expected him to have the impact he did. The man was a savage force that few could withstand and that included the irrepressible John Cena. I’m shocked either of these managed to be the last man standing.

The Powers of Pain, The Rockers, The British Bulldogs, The Hart Foundation, and The Young Stallions v Demolition, The Brain Busters, The Bolsheviks, Fabulous Rougeaus, and The Conquistadors – Survivor Series 1988

I realise this takes out a lot of wrestlers from being included in any of the other 9 matches but this is such a fun match. There are very few 42 minute matches that hold up to repeat viewing and this is top of that list. You get to see so many styles in one match and it never gets boring.

Randy Orton v Ric Flair – Taboo Tuesday 2004
Who’s have thought in 1994 when Flair was battling Hogan in a cage that 10 years on he’d be headlining a WWE PPV in another cage match against Champion Randy Orton. This was a great great match.

Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior – WrestleMania VI

One of my favourite matches of all time that brings back such good memories of watching this match live at my mate’s house. It was such a huge mark-out moment to see Warrior win the title and then the acknowledgement between the two legends as a fallen Hogan goes to the back on his cart.

Rock v Triple H – SummerSlam 1998

I loved this match – it was great to see two wrestlers have a ladder match without all the highspots. These two were on fire at this time and the IC Title has rarely been taken to such a high level.

Ricky Steamboat v Randy Savage – WrestleMania III

I absolutely love this match! Such awesome examples of how to play a face and a heel by the two wrestlers, and some amazing action. Give me this over any of the Steamboat/Flair matches any day of the week!

Sting, Steiners and El Gigante v Cactus Jack, Diamond Studd, Vader and Abdullah the Butcher – Halloween Havoc 1991

Probably the greatest example of a fun match in pro wrestling history! Forget looking for ‘workrate’ and giving out snowflakes – this is sports entertainment gold! The look on Jack’s face when Abby wakes up after being fried is brilliant. This is a must see match and would brighten up any day.

Chris Jericho v Stone Cold Steve Austin – Vengeance 2001
Beating The Rock was impressive, but to go on and beat Austin on the same night was an amazing performance from Chris Jericho and seeing him victorious was an awesome moment and one that would make me smile on lonely nights spent on my desert island.

Midnight Express v Southern Boys – Great American Bash 1990

Tag team gold from the greatest tag team in the world and a not too shabby Armstrong and Smothers. This rates as my favourite tag team match in WCW, ever!

The Miz v Daniel Bryan – Raw, February 14th 2011
Before you attack me for being stuck in the past this choice match proves that I am back up to date with WWE and this match features the future of WWE, and Daniel Bryan. A fantastic battle that almost saw Bryan fluke a win past the Awesome One, but not quite.

So there you have it, my 10 Desert Island matches. Now the challenge is for you to reply and come up with yours – the best entry will win a DVD of their choosing* Closing date is March 25th - Good luck!

• not including PPV bosets or anthology boxsets.

Here are my choices. Cheers for the great competition Silvervision!

1. Wrestlemania 25 - Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker

This match had high expectations, but I don't think anyone expected it to be THIS good. Watching it live completely
blue me away. The near falls, the high spots, the intensity, it was incredible. Shawn Michaels came closer than anyone ever did to
breaking the streak and it's now hard to believe anyone can do it. The two had a great match the next again year but it didn't touch
the match quality of this one in my opinion. Simply put - it's my favourite match of all time.

2. Wrestlemania 13 - Bret Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin

I was only two years old when this match happened so I didn't have the luxury of watching it live but I heard so much about it and I heard
from many sources it was the greatest match of all time and it secured Stone Cold's place in the main event for years to come. I wouldn't
class it as the best match ever but it was pretty incredible! The storytelling and techincal wrestling was superb. Quite possibly the
best match in both of these mens illustrious careers.

3. Royal Rumble 2000 - Triple H vs Cactus Jack

This is another match that I didn't watch live but when I saw it I loved it. One definite thing that can be said about this match is
that it was absoloutely brutal. After watching this match I gained so much more respect for both Triple H and Mick Foley, going through
this match would have been agony but they did it to entertain us. Speaking of entertainment, it certainly didn't fail in that catagory.
This is one of those matches that you can watch over and over again and never get bored of it. My second favourite match of all time.

4. Wrestlemania 18 - The Rock vs Hulk Hogan

This was a dream match at the time. It was the face of the Golden Era vs argubaly the face of the Attitude Era, it was icon vs icon. It
wasn't a technical masterpiece but the atmosphere alone made this match one of the greatest ever. The stare down between these two defines
the term "Wrestlemania Moment". Although most people were cheering for Hogan, they got the winner right on the day. In a way it was a
passing of the torch match. Matches like these is what Wrestlemania was made for.

5. The Bash 2009 - Chris Jericho vs Rey Mysterio

This match was mask vs Intercontinental championship. Both men played their role extremely well. This match was just so fun to watch from
start to finish. It was the perfect lengh and it had great high flying and techincal wrestling. It was the second best match of 2009, it
restored credability to the Intercontinental title and it cemented these two mens legacy as two of the greatest in ring performers ever.

6. Wrestlemania 26 - John Cena vs Batista

Love these men or hate them, you can't deny that these two are the faces of our current era. Both won their first world titles five years
previous to this event, at Wrestlemania 21. They had a small fued in 2008, but it wasn't as big as this. This match was a dream match for
many people but lots of people wanted Batista and Cena to mess up. They proved everyone wrong and put on an extremely entertaining match
which I love to watch.

7. TLC 2010 - John Morrison vs Sheamus

This was a very recent match as it only happened a few months ago. The stipulation was a ladder match and the winner would become the
number one contender for the WWE Championship. It was fast paced and extremely entertaining throughout. There were was a true Oh My God
moment when Sheamus went crashing through the ladder, breaking it in the process. I would put this match in the top 3 of 2010 and I would
not argue with anyone who called it match of the year.

8. Royal Rumble 2011 - Edge vs Dolph Ziggler

This is another very recent match. The stipulation was that Edge could not use the Spear. If he did, he would lose his World
Heavyweight Championship. This match had brilliant storytelling and even though Ziggler lost, he looked like a true main eventer on that
night and there were points were I actually thought he would win. It is my favourite match of 2011 as of March.

9. No Way Out 2006 - Cruiserweight Championship Match

This was a nine way match for the Cruiserweight champion. Included was the likes of Kid Kash, Gregory Helms and the Mexicools. It's never
talked about as being a great match but I feel it's highly underrated. This is probably the case none of the stars in the this match
really got past the Cruiserweight division. It's a shame because is filled with high spots and OMG moments. It truly makes me miss the
Cruiserweight division.

10. No Way Out 2006 - Booker T vs Chris Benoit

Another match from No Way Out 2006, such an underrated event. The story behind this match was that Booker had beaten Benoit in a best of
seven series for the US Title. The catch was he got "injured" half way through and Randy Orton won it as his substitute. He continues to
sell the injury and Teddy Long says he must fight Benoit or forfeit the title. He chooses to forfeit but Benoit keeps calling him a coward
which makes him change his mind. The match itself is very good too. As you would expect from two it was technical, high flying and it
had great storytelling. Another greatly underrated match.

In chronological order:
1. Jake Roberts vs. Ricky Steamboat (SNME, October 1986)
These are two of the greatest of all-time. They had many outstanding matches but I think this one comes out top if only for the pre-match promo by Jake with %u201CMean%u201D Gene - %u201CYou%u2019re a sick man, Roberts%u201D.

2. Roddy Piper vs. Adrian Adonis (WrestleMania III)
Not a technical masterpiece but just an amazing spectacle. Piper%u2019s entrance by itself is incredible. If he had stayed retired, it would have been an amazing farewell. Nonetheless, it remains an iconic moment in Mania history.

3. Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk (Great American Bash 89)
I%u2019m not a huge fan of Funk so I never bothered checking this one out until the Definitive Flair Collection came out. I was really impressed when I did. I actually like this one more so than the Clash I Quit match.

4. Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage (WrestleMania VII)
What else can be said about this classic? Incredible drama. Everything from Savage%u2019s repeated elbows, Warrior%u2019s belief that he cannot win to the final pin is awe-inspiring.

5. The Steiners vs. Lex Luger and Sting (SuperBrawl I)
I was delighted to see this released on the Rise and Fall of WCW DVD. Finally, I could retire my old Superbrawl tape! This is a perfect example of why The Steiners may be the greatest team of all time.

6. Mr. Perfect vs. Bret Hart (Summerslam 1991)
Speaking of perfect. This match truly is perfect. I%u2019d say this must be in the top 5 of all time for Bret which is saying something.

7. Shawn Michaels and Diesel vs. Razor Ramon and 1-2-3 Kid (Action Zone, Oct 94)
Why this match hasn%u2019t been put on DVD yet, I%u2019ll never know. This would have been perfect for the Stars of the 90s set as it shows 4 of the top stars of the decade in a super match. A true lost gem.

8. British Bulldog vs. Owen Hart (Raw, Feb 97)
Amazing match that really doesn%u2019t get its due. Personally, I think it%u2019s the greatest match in Raw history.

9. Edge and Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. The Dudley Boyz (Summerslam 2000)
I prefer this one over the two Mania ones as it had a better build-up and since it was the first TLC, it wasn%u2019t overkill with spots we%u2019ve all seen before.

10. Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle (Summerslam 2001)
Another forgotten classic. Fantastic atmosphere throughout the match with the crowd really getting behind Angle.
